In the world of mobile games dominated by gacha mechanics and multiplayer-centric gameplay, singleplayer titles are a rarity. Another Eden is one of these games and it provides a classic JRPG experience with a modern feel. Its story and overall design was penned by the creator of Chrono Trigger, one of the highly-acclaimed classic JRPGs. It is backed by high production value, an outstanding voice cast (both in English and Japanese) and beautiful anime art style. With that said, is it something you’d want to play? Let’s check out what it has to offer.
If you’re absolutely into turn-based single-player JRPGs, then Another Eden is a game you should definitely dive into. The experience is akin to playing classic and modern turn-based JRPGs like the Final Fantasy series and even Chrono Trigger. You’ll start off with the main character named Aldo and unlock several ones as you progress. The game has hero-collecting gacha elements where you can summon a character with the chances of getting a rare one at five percent. Progression is robust: when a character levels up, you can choose skill paths and trees. You can also give them equipment which you’ll pick up in the world, buy from merchants, or get as quest rewards.
Another Eden is devoid of typical mobile JRPG mechanics like daily missions, energy gauges, and any online friends functionality. It’s a pure, singleplayer mobile experience and a breath of fresh air in the microtransaction-dominated field. The only microtransactions in the game are a $30 pass for new characters and gacha stones called Chronos stones. They’re optional and you don’t need to buy them to progress further into the game.
Another Eden is narrative-heavy, which means you’ll need to sit through hours of well-localized dialogue and a number of cutscenes to make sense out of the story. It has a typical JRPG storyline which will of course appeal to anime and RPG fans. Plus, it’s well-written and you’ll get to follow the story of a number of intriguing characters. There are 26 main story chapters and more content in the form of side quests and optional objectives.
Another Eden employs a turn-based combat system similar to the old Final Fantasy series and of course, Chrono Trigger. You’ll get to select a character’s attack and his/her target in each turn. The moves are then executed based on the characters’ speed stat (the fastest unit attacks first). You can bring up to six characters - four in the frontlines and two in reserve. You can swap characters and while they’re in reserve, they can heal and recover MP. When they’re summoned, they provide buffs like enhanced defense and attack which varies depending on the character.
You’ll explore Another Eden’s world by moving around 2D areas. You’ll get into monster-infested areas that trigger random encounters, as well as safety hubs where you can get quests, interact with other characters, and buy equipment. Thing is, bosses are visible as well as objectives and treasure chests. In terms of presentation, both the graphics and art style are top-notch. There’s not much fan service (which is a good thing). The character designs aren’t exactly unique, but the characters are pretty well-designed.
Overall, Another Eden may not look spectacular, but it’s one of the best mobile gaming experiences out there. After all, it’s one of the few singleplayer turn-based JRPGs out there, and everything about it checks out: a great story, outstanding visuals, a stellar cast, and minimal microtransactions. If you’re a JRPG fan, it’s definitely something you need to play right away.
