Jumanji: The Mobile Game is based on the new movie. It even has a character model that looks exactly like Dwayne Johnson, one of the movie’s stars. That aside, the franchise has been around for years, and it even had a decent animated series and an old movie starring Robin Williams. Anyway, the mobile game is a pretty decent title, and although it doesn’t have rampaging animals or suck you into a forested world, it provides great board game experience you would want to go through with your friends. So, what can you expect when you play it? Let’s take a look at what it brings to the table:

Board games are experiencing a digital renaissance, and you certainly get “board” of them. Horrible puns and dad jokes aside, Jumanji: The Mobile Game lets you control one of the characters in the film and you’re basically using a dice to move around the board. The game will remind you of something like Monopoly, although the experience is a little inferior. For example, there are several squares on the board, and when you land on one, you have free reign to build anything. However, if there’s another player on the spot, you either need to fight them for it, or pay up to settle things peacefully.

Jumanji: The Mobile Game has a cards mechanic wherein you can use their effects to win your games. There’s a bit of a learning curve to overcome when constructing and designing a new deck, and with every card you receive, you open up numerous possibilities every time you enter a game. The selection isn’t varied though: there are only 40 different cards in total, but nevertheless, you can use different deck combinations to win your games. Cards are game changers and have various active and passive effects. Be sure to utilize them well whenever you take the board.

Speaking of winning, there are several ways to do so in Jumanji. FIrst is the patient method, which is to finish all 12 turns and hoarding the most amount of gold by the end of the game. Second is to take a huge chunk of the game board by building your properties on them. Finally, the last way is to make sure your opponent goes bankrupt. When you start the game and get over the learning curve, you may be able to construct a deck that lets you achieve any of these win conditions.

Unfortunately, Jumanji: The Mobile Game is a classic free to play game riddled with microtransactions. When you start, you will end up squaring off with relative easy opponents, but once you progress, a seemingly insurmountable paywall will rise. Enemies and other players way out of your league will be matched up against you, urging you to pay up to purchase better cards and items.

Overall, Jumanji: The Mobile Game does well in a few aspects, especially the art style. The paywall and steep learning curve may put off a few potential players, but nevertheless, it is a game that lives up to the movie. Well hey, it has Dwayne Johnson in it.
