Grand Theft Auto is one of the most popular game series out there and it’s not easy to figure out as to why a number of developers want to provide the same kind of experience it does. Dude Theft Wars is one of these games and though it feels in emulating GTA, it does a number of things well enough to warrant a playthrough. This sandbox game has first-person and third-person shooting elements, as well as role-playing aspects. So, is this game for you? Let’s find out what it has to offer:

Your role in Dude Theft Wars isn’t to be the crime lord of an entire city or get rid of corrupt federal investigators. It’s a true sandbox, and the gameplay is oriented around roaming around Dude-o-polis, a small town, and doing whatever you want. So yes, you can do things you can’t in real life, like dancing on the streets and basking in the sun or doing what these types of games want you to do: cause havoc. After all, being a good, upstanding citizen here is boring, so entertain yourself by harming people, stealing their money, run over pedestrians, and throwing grenades all over the place. Sounds morbid, but hey, it’s a video game.

Dude Theft Wars controls are fairly simple and intuitive. The camera is in first-person, and you move around with a virtual joystick on the left side of the screen. Performing actions, such as shooting your weapons or slapping people can be done by a large action button on the right side of the screen. Surrounding it are the aim and jump buttons. The view switches to third person when you’re driving a car, with the accelerate and brake buttons on the right side of the screen. The virtual joystick retains its spot in the left. There is no need for a tutorial if you’ve had any experience with FPS games before, and new players would get the hang of it after 15 minutes.

There are several weapons in Dude Theft Auto, from assault rifles like the AK47 and SCAR, as well as submachine guns and shotguns. You can purchase these weapons from the gun shop. Explosives like grenades are also available if you big booms to occur. Finally, if you prefer a personal approach, there’s always the option of using your trusty baseball bat to do the talking. There are also vehicles like your standard cars, skateboards, and trucks. Outlandish options include monster trucks and even a UFO.

Unfortunately, Dude Theft Wars was made with technical limitations in mind. Dude-o-polis isn’t exactly a thriving metropolis. Rather, it is more like a small town you would see on the boondocks. Although there are a lot of things you can do, place feels barren. Only a few cars roam the roads, and pedestrians are far and few in between. Compensating these are the game’s excellent physics and art style that is a perfect fit.

Overall, Dude Theft Auto is a well-made sandbox that could have been better with additions like a story and a world that feels more alive. In any case, it can provide a great amount of entertainment within the first few hours, but as you continue playing, it might feel like it is overstaying its welcome.
