That’s You! is essentially a Playstation 4 game, but the controllers are smartphones which have the companion app installed. It was announced on E3 2017 last June and was released a few weeks later. In a nutshell, it is Sony’s attempt to make social or party gaming available on the Playstation 4. It is a fun, hilarious title filled with mini-games that ask questions about a certain participant and will test how well they know each other. Thing is, would it be something you would want to try out with your friends? Let’s find out:
First off, take note that you need a Playstation 4 with That’s You installed. The mobile app is merely a companion app which uses the smartphone as a controller. Imagine playing the game on four Dualshock 4 controllers: it would be impossible and the game would not be accessible to everyone. The companion app is available on both Android and iOS and makes use of all of the device’s hardware, from the touchscreen to the camera. Personally, setting things up didn’t take a lot of time if you don’t have connectivity issues. You need to connect the phones to the same WiFi connection as the Playstation 4.
You can play with up to five people - the E3 demo showed a demo which had Sony’s top honchos playing, including the President of Sony’s Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida. In a nutshell, the app lets you play the game. Here, you can answer questions about you or your friends, as well as perform activities such as drawing them wearing eccentric clothing. The game also requires you to take a lot of pictures of you and your friends, since you will be required to doodle over the photographs.
The questions themselves can get a little awkward though, especially since a number of them are with regard to one’s lovelife. Fortunately, you can create your own questions in the app for a more customized gameplay and make your friends relate more. Moreover, there are also choice questions wherein you will be asked things like “Who is more likely to run when you encounter a bear in the forest?”. The game is competitive, although the scoring system depends on how many players have similar answers to the game’s questions. Each player has three “Jokers”, or buffs that double your score, but it would only be smart to use them if you’re positive that the other players will have similar answers.
The best parts of That’s You! are the games that make full use of the smartphone cameras. A lot of selfies will be taken, considering that the game will ask you to mimic the expressions shown on screen. At times, a player may be required to pose so the others can doodle over him or her.
Overall, That’s You! cannot hold a finger to games such as The Witcher 3, Dark Souls, and Persona 5. Nor is it a game you can play for hours on end. Nevertheless, it’s great fun and is highly recommended if you have guests who aren’t avid gamers coming over. There are over a thousand questions and activities you can do with your friends and family. Play it and be treated to hours of laughter, weirdness, and craziness of epic proportions.
