When Space Invaders (Supēsu Inbēdā) was first released by Japanese game company Taito in the late 1970's, not only did it capture the then electronic gaming industry (both arcade and home console) but it set up the template for the arcade vertical shooter genre. by the early 1980's, the game had become the highest grossing video game product of it's time. Through the years, the vertical shooter formula that Space Invaders introduced has led to so many variations of the game. All these games combined have grossed over 13billion USD by 2016 thus making it the top grossing video game genre of all time.
The game lets the player control a ship that can move left to right under a number of defense bunkers. Armed with a canon , the ship must shoot down rows and rows of incoming enemy invaders that shoot back every now and then in return. The bunkers can absorb the enemy bombardment but they get used up and destroyed in the process which would leave the defending ship eventually exposed to enemy attack. The player either wins the round by taking down an entire enemy wave group to win or getting blown up by the enemy (with no more extra lives) or the invading horde reaching the bottom which in both cases ends the game in the invaders favor.
As mentioned, several variations of this game mechanics formula has been developed and used through the years to create better looking and more fun and interesting arcade games. Today, in our time of mobile gaming, the legacy of Supēsu Inbēdā lives on. Arcade shooter games fit well for the mobile gaming environment as they rely more heavily on immersive and addictive game play rather than the high-end graphics that the current consoles and powerful PC's can produce.
Galaxy Sky Shooting recently released for the mobile market is one such game. The game is both immersive and addictive and locks the player into a go for a higher score loop of game play. Adapting the vertical shooter invading enemy template, the game however adds one directional vertical scrolling to the game giving the impression of the defending ship moving forward through space.
Just like the original invaders, hordes of enemies attack downward whether at random or in Space Invader formation. Aside from the invaders, the player has to deal with various multiple obstacles like incoming asteroids and otrher space debris that nevertheless pose great danger to the health of the little defense fighter. Included in the game are the awesome boss fights with the makings of a David vs Goliath battle scenes. These boss ships release weapons fire in multiple burst that the player has to evade while pummeling the behemoth with a barrage of powerful projectile streams to bring it down.
As the player, one must be always focused on the objects floating through the screen and try not to miss the power-ups that come ones way. They give you special weapon ordinance, varied firing modes as well as shields, extended health and other features to aid you in the game. Bringing down the boss and completing the level earns you rewards as well. You have around 10 defender ships to choose from and at the end of each mission, you can upgrade your fighter and even spin a wheel to get random items or features that you can plough back into your game play.
Just like most games of the arcade era, Galaxy Sky Shooting seems to be an endless shooter game. Mission after mission keeps moving on as you rack up a new high score to beat your last. The graphics and sounds though are awesome! The game however has a catch, it's a hyper-casual game which means hordes and hordes of ads to make up for it's free2play status. Of course you can spend real cash to get rid of these as well as for items and features to get ahead in the game if you have the cash to spend but it's a little bit expensive (as of this review) as compared to other mobile games.
Nevertheless, withstanding it's strength and weaknesses, Galaxy Sky Shooting is an awesome way to reminisce the glory days of Space Invaders and other arcade games of it's variety and have lots of immersive fun as well.
